30 Communities Sus it Out™

Over 30 communities have now had their Sus it Out™ sessions. From the Highlands to Dumfries & Galloway, Glasgow and Edinburgh and places in between demand has been high. It is a diverse group of communities from groups delivering very local projects to those providing services through social enterprise models. The most recent sessions were with the East Kilbride Development Trust and Reachout with Arts in Mind in Alloa. These groups are joing a growing band committed to delivering their activities in a different way, reducing their environmental impacts, increasing their social interactions whilst being economically responsible.

Abriachan Village Hall

A busy time in the Highlands for Iain Roxburgh who worked with a second group in Arbiachan working to maintain and develop the village hall in a more sustainable way. The local commitee are trying to reduce revenue running cost and provide better facilities to encourage greater use of the hall. The session provided a backdrop to discuss energy efficiency measures and greener heating systems.

A Heart for Scotstoun

Sus it Out Plus™ hit the streets of Glasgow in late November with a session with with the Heart for Scotstoun Trust.  Facilitator Sandra Renicks worked with a number of the trustees and their community engagement worker to highlight key areas for improvement. The trust itself began in 1997 as a campaign, leading to formal recognition as a charity in 2004, to improve community facilities. The group explored new development ideas including biofuels, childcare facilities and community led recycling initiatives.

The Sus it Out Plus™ programme has received a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to work with 200 community groups over the three years to 31 March 2012.  The grant was awarded under the Dynamic Inclusive Communities strand of the Investing in Communities programme, with an emphasis on delivering on their Outcome 5 - People and communities have more power over their lives and more say in decisions that are made about them.
